Flexible Image Transport System (.fits)

Flexible Image Transport System, or FITS for short, is a digital file format developed by astronomers in the USA and Europe in the late 1970s to serve the interchange of data between observatories and was brought under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union in 1982. FITS format is often used for saving capturing frames of telescope observations into digital files.

The format is supported by the International Astronomical Union, NASA, and other national and international bodies engaged in astronomy and related fields.
