DDS, which stands for DirectDraw Surface is a container file format developed by Microsoft for storing compressed and uncompressed pixel formats. It is often used for texturing video game unit models and storing digital photos and desktop backgrounds. Microsoft introduced the DDS format with DirectX 7.0 and has since introduced various improvements.
HEIC, abbreviated from High-Efficiency Image Container, is an image file container that uses High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC, ITU-T H.265) for storing multiple images in a single file. HEIC is used natively in Apple iOS and macOS devices and each photo takes up about half the space of an equivalent quality JPEG file.
