DDS, which stands for DirectDraw Surface is a container file format developed by Microsoft for storing compressed and uncompressed pixel formats. It is often used for texturing video game unit models and storing digital photos and desktop backgrounds. Microsoft introduced the DDS format with DirectX 7.0 and has since introduced various improvements.
The PBM which stands for Portable Bit-Map is a simple structured monochrome raster image format designed by Jef Poskanzer in the 1980s. It was intended to transmit bitmaps over the email messages as the plain ASCII text.
