MP is the native format used by Multiplan, a spreadsheet program developed by Microsoft in 1982. Despite the release of Microsoft Chart as a graphics companion program, Multiplan was outsold by Lotus 1-2-3 and eventually replaced by Microsoft Excel. According to Bill Gates, this was due to the excessive number of ports.
An XLSM file is a macro-enabled Excel workbook created in Excel 2007 or later. It is similar to an XLSX file but can execute embedded macros programmed in VBA. Data is stored in cells arranged in rows and columns and can be organized within separate sheets in a single workbook.
