It is an open standard format that was developed to provide a free and open alternative to proprietary file formats such as Microsoft's PPT and PPTX formats.
The PPM which stands for Portable Pix-Map is a simple structured RGB raster image format designed by Jef Poskanzer in the 1980s. It was designed to easily exchange binary images between different platforms.
